Members for Members
The concept of OslerBrook emerged in the mid nineteen nineties from a group of ski club members determined to create the best of the family skiing experience in a new and unique golfing experience. The Founders of OslerBrook started with the imperative of a superbly architected and environmentally responsible championship golf course along the Nipissing Ridge, close to the seasonal and increasingly, permanent homes of ski club members and their friends. The Founders also reflected on the quality and inclusive lifelong experience of the ski club and of 'Best of Class' family focused golf courses throughout the world. The Club was to be, and is, a 'Members for Members' Club.
The Dream
With these parameters, the Club was launched in late 1997 with a group of Founding Members providing what turned out to be several, indeed many rounds of seed capital. Building this unique dream, everyone understood that it would be a challenge - perhaps a 'Mission Impossible' as the amateur but extraordinarily dedicated volunteers were to learn. Among the first steps was the creation of a Member Steering Committee, including visits to golf courses throughout North America. The decision - hire the emerging superstar Canadian Golf Architect, Graham Cooke, supported by locally based Jason Miller.
At last, in November 2003 approvals happened and in early December land deals closed, and a Project Manager was hired along with expert contractors. By Christmas, the Golf Course was beginning to take shape.
OslerBrook opened with 9 holes (10 – 18) in July 2005 amidst great fanfare.
Construction on the Club House commenced in the spring of 2005 and was completed late May, 2006. On June 3, 2006 the Members Opening Scramble was played on the full 18 holes. This was followed by yet another grand bash on Canada Day, honoring Peter Kingsmill as founder and the host of stalwart volunteers that helped make it all happen.
The Wyandot Heritage
Within the boundaries of OslerBrook lie the remains of a Petun Indian Ossuary and village dating back to the days of Champlain. OslerBrook Golf & Country Club is proud to preserve and celebrate the heritage of our special property. A stone cairn now stands near the site of the ossuary. The plaque on the cairn reads: “The Rockbottom archaeological site, situated on the OslerBrook property, is an early seventeenth Century Tionnantate (Wyandot) village and associated cemetery. The village which is approximately 2.5 hectares in area, likely contains the remains of a number of longhouses and may have been encircled by a palisade. Since the Tionnantate, or as Champlain referred to them: the “Nation du Petun” (tobacco nation), were horticulturalists, the village would have been surrounded by hundreds of hectares of corn. European trade goods recovered from the site indicate that the inhabitants were trading with their Wendat (Huron) neighbors and the French. Both the village and associated cemetery have been preserved in place by the OslerBrook”.
The cairn, which was funded by voluntary donations from our membership and suppliers, has a special compartment for time capsules and historical items gifted from descendants of the original Petun inhabitants, local school children and the Golf Club.
In recognition of OslerBrook’s stewardship of the history of our property, the Club was presented with The Ontario Archeological Society’s Heritage Conservation Award for 2006.
A Community of Friends
The founding skiers have been joined by serious, capable, low handicap golfers, by not so serious but determined higher handicap beginners, by locals and others buying a “futures option” for their permanent migration to the beauty of the Georgian Tri-angle and to the inclusive, friendly, challenging but fun OlserBrook Experience. There is a passion and a commitment that together has created and will sustain a very special place.
Welcome to OslerBrook!
